How many hours do you spend at work?
Take a moment and think how many hours you spend at work. For me it’s 15-20 hours a week, but I’m a student. According to Business Insider an average person spends 90,000 hours at work over the course of their life. That’s a pretty big number!
If the average person is spending this amount of time at work, wouldn’t it be logical to actually look forward to going to their place of business? This thought is something that business’ have been trying to improve over the course of the last several years. From a psychological view, humans have very basic and fundamental needs that must be fulfilled. In Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs we see the basic needs are: physiological, safety, belongingness, esteem, and self-actualization.
If we look at belongingness, think about how important it is to feel like you belong at work. Belonging is the want and desire to fit in with a group of people. The workplace can be one of those places that you feel like you don’t belong. It can hinder your productivity and also how you feel.
Maybe you eat lunch with your coworkers every day, or maybe you spend your lunch hour working because you haven’t found anyone to connect with. Feeling a sense of inclusivity is important to virtually everyone. This can be seen especially in bigger companies with hundreds of employees who feel obsolete. This is why it’s extremely important for business’ to create community opportunities within the workplace.
Creating community at Work
Creating community in the workplace allows for employees to feel part of your team and gives them a sense of value and purpose. The companies who provide a place where socialization amongst employees is encouraged, excel far more in keeping their employees happy. Google is a great example, they strive to optimize their company culture and making the workplace a fun and innovative space. They do so by creating a feeling of community, such as having game rooms or long lunch tables for employees to sit at. By effectively executing events and socialization for their employees, companies can keep their employees happy. This cycle of employees sense of belonging and community being met will help increase their productivity for your company.
